Empathizing

While standing in the elevator I made an offhand joke about a recent local tragedy in the news. My colleague's jaw dropped. I forgot for one second, one second, that some people in the world have actual feelings about people other than themselves, and sometimes even people they've never met. You can't let your guard down for one second around these folks.
