New Year's Day Promises

We were getting onto a plane out of town last week and ran into two friends we haven't seen in about a year. They're legendary for their New Year's Day afternoon party, and for years they invited us and we'd accept only to send a text to cancel day-of. After a few years they stopped inviting us. On the plane, we took the bold step of asking if we could come to the party this year, and at the time I honestly believed that we'd go. Now, just a day away, I know there's no chance we'll go all they way to their house on our mid-week day off. Not because we're going to be hungover, but because there's no way we'll want to leave home. By now this couple should expect us to cancel. They should know better. We even made plans with them last week and canceled those.
