When I was a kid I begged my parents to buy me a coconut from our grocery store. It was such an odd exotic thing that didn't belong in our corner of the world, far from the palm-lined beaches and coral atolls where I imagined it had come from. One day they relented. We broke it open and tried the milk and pulp, and it was without doubt the most repulsive thing I've ever tasted in my life. I still can't eat anything with coconut sprinkles, even cookies where people say "you can't even taste the coconut." I taste it. And it does not taste like palm-lined beaches.
