Can't Make It

One of my friends called at the last minute to say he wasn't going to come camping with us. He said something like, "Look, I don't want to bail on you guys but..." When in fact, what he did want to do was bail on us; what he didn't want was us to think he was a jerk for doing so. There's an important difference there.
