Does anyone remember Sweetest Day? It happened when the card, candy, and floral companies got greedy and hired a PR firm to try to pass a second Valentine's Day off on us years ago. I'm surprised there wasn't open rebellion. Valentine's Day is a holiday of unmet expectations, self-loathing, and hurt feelings. If you're single, it's depressing. And if you're in a new relationship, you're forced into an odd romantic situation too soon. And if you're in a long-term relationship, you know that one person's expectations on the holiday will be much greater than the other's. If you go to dinner, you have to make restaurant reservations months in advance, and then when you get there, you're forced into prix fixe menus that are more expensive and designed to push you out of the building in a half-hour so they can give your seat to some sucker (usually me) who didn't make reservations until the last minute. Just stay home this year.
