The past couple weeks I've been reading George R.R. Martin's fantasy epic Game of Thrones. If you're unfamiliar, they're books that follow around a handful of characters as they make their way through an extensive and richly detailed world of medieval, magical happenings. There are a lot of knights, alliances, and yes, dragons. The books are about 1,000 pages each, and I'm on the third one. I've also begun watching the Game of Thrones series based on the book on HBO. It's of like an adults-only Harry Potter where the deaths are far more graphic and frequent. The language of the book comes with a certain lilt--a bit of a medieval ring, though it's easy to understand. Between my reading and watching the series, I'm hearing and seeing more words in this old way of speaking than the way we talk today, and I have to remind myself not to talk like I'm from the land of the 7 kingdoms. A few years back I saw some people in the park fighting with wooden swords and wearing old looking armor. I need to be careful. That's not a road I want to go down.
