My girlfriend's brother was asked to submit an essay about overcoming adversity for one of his college entrance applications, and he sent it to me for feedback. It was a fine story about how his struggle after failing Spanish class had been a humbling experience that required summer school, studying and perseverance. In the essay he talks about studying over the summer and returning to pass his class. I helped him out with a bit of subject/verb agreement and a little punctuation. What I really wanted to point out is that writing about failing one of your classes might not show the admissions board that you posses the most sound judgment.
