I was in a small army surplus store in Ecuador shopping for gifts for friends back home. Alongside stacks of fatigues, what looked like weapon parts, and hats was a shelf of rum of indeterminate origin. The woman working at the store didn't speak English very well and my Spanish is an embarrassment to my high school teachers. By pointing and holding up fingers I determined the bottles of rum were $5, so I bought one. I paid and she wrapped it in old newspaper, and then we she handed it to me she said, "Good luck." That she chose this phrase from her limited English on this product troubled me, but not enough to stop me from drinking the stuff.
