I have never won money in a football pool and yet I play them every year. But it's not the possibility of riches that sucks me in. I know I probably won't win. The reason I play is the assurance that I will care much, much more about every single game I watch if there's even a remote possibility that some nominal amount of money will come my way if there's a specific outcome. My friend Travis understood. We were watching American Gladiators and the red team was down by ten points. He looked around the room and said, "I got $10 on the red team winning, if anyone wants that action."
