The internet was a lawless land in its early days. It still is, but at least now I know the rules. I remember one of my junior high friends dug his dad's credit card out of his wallet to enter his info to get past a paywall. Then at the end of his browsing session he was emailed a bill for several thousand dollars. The website claimed they just needed the credit card number for identification, and that they wouldn't charge him. I think that for a few years, everyone who heard his story worried that they would somehow enter a 'payzone' and end up getting stuck with a massive bill that they never knew they'd signed up for.
