The Waiter Tax
When I lived in Minnesota, the state legislator enacted a tax on table service. It was a fraction of a percentage, and it was only levied on waiters and waitresses -- not bartenders. I have no problem with paying taxes, in fact it's very easy to be American. All they make you do is pay taxes and go to jury duty every six years, you don't even have to vote or join the military. But this tax was one I had no interest in paying. The waiter tax was used to pay for improvements to the Metrodome, home of the Minnesota Vikings. From the moment I heard about it until they ended the tax, I ate all my meals and ordered all my drinks at the bar whenever I headed downtown. I take the bad with the good when it comes to government, and I understand that I don't get to choose where my tax dollars go. But if there's any humanly possible way to avoid it, the Minnesota Vikings will not get a cent from me.
